ホイスッラー展（横浜美術館） James McNeill Whistler - Retrospective (Yokohama Museum of Art)

去年から楽しみにしていた、ホイッスラー展。ボストン、テート、フィラデルフィア、シカゴなど、世界中の美術館から作品が集結した、充実した内容。

ホイッスラーは、ユニークな経歴を持っている。アメリカで生まれ、幼少期をロシアで過ごし、アメリカに戻ってから、ウェスト・ポイント陸軍士官学校に入学している。

その後、画家を目指しパリに渡り、印象派の生まれた雰囲気で絵を学び、その後は主にロンドンで暮らし、そこではラファエル前派の画家たちとも交流を持った。

そうした多彩な経験が、ホイッスラーの画風に影響を与えたのだろうか。

展示された作品は、人物画と風景画。油彩もあったが、エッチングを中心とした版画が多かった。

ホイッスラーは、印象派の画家たちと同様、日本の浮世絵に強い関心を持っていた。

北斎、広重などの描く、橋を画面に配した絵や、清長の遊女たちの浮世絵に、イメージを触発されたようだ。

そのせいか、絵の題材としては、橋の絵の多さが目についた。

ロンドンのウェストミンスター橋は、鉄筋で作られた橋だが、ホイッスラーの絵の中では、まるで木の橋のように描かれている。

青と銀色のノクターン、という作品は、テムズ川の風景が、暗い闇の中に描かれていて、そのダークな世界観が、強烈な印象を残す。

赤と黒：扇、という作品は、大きめの女性の全身像だが、黒地の赤のドレスが美しい。特に、その赤は、絵の具をただ置いただけだが、魔術的な美しさがある。
