天神万華鏡（松濤美術館） Images of Sugawara no Michizane (The Shoto Museum of Art)

常盤山文庫所蔵の天神コレクションの特別展。

室町時代から江戸時代にかけての、様々な絵師達による、天神様すなわち菅原道真の肖像。

そのあまりのバリエーションの多さに、呆れてしまう。別な絵師の絵とはいえ、同じ人物を描いて、これほど違うのを見ると、思わず笑ってしまう。

日本の絵師にとって、人物や神を描くことは、その本人に似せて描くよりは、周りの人々が持っているイメージに合わせて描く、ということなのだろう。

鈴木其一、土佐光起、などの有名絵師も名を連ねている。

中には、伝雪舟という作品もある。勿論、伝、なので本物ではないが、オリジナルの雪舟の絵自体は、実際に存在していたらしい。

北野天満宮絵巻といえば、東京国立博物館所蔵の、ユーモラスな鬼の絵で知られるが、その作品以外にも、多くの北野天満宮絵巻が描かれ、今に伝わっている。

展示されていたのは、室町時代のものだが、絵は実にシンプルに描かれ、肩の力を抜いて気軽に楽しめる。

菅原道真は、浮世絵の中にもよく登場する。

それは、歌舞伎に菅原伝授手習鑑、という大ヒットした作品があるからだ。今でも、歌舞伎の代表的な出し物になっている。

歌川豊国、歌川国貞らの売れっ子絵師達が、競って菅原伝授手習鑑からの場面の絵を描いた。

菅原道真と言えば、天神様。東京には、湯島天神、亀戸天神など、多くの天神様がある。

こちらも、歌川広重、小林清親などが描いている。天神様、すなわち菅原道真は、庶民にとっても身近な存在なのだ。
