出光興産の創業者、出光佐三が福岡県、宗像市の出身で、地元の宗像大社には、厚い信仰心を持っていた縁があるのだという。なるほど。
最初の展示室には、古い鏡、勾玉、装飾品など。およそ30点が国宝。これほど多くの国宝を目にする機会は、珍しい。
現在の宗像大社は、九州の陸地の方に建っているが、かつては、離れ小島であった沖の島に鎮座していた。
沖の島は、朝鮮半島と対馬、そして福岡周辺をきれいに3等分するあたりにあり、古代の時代は、大陸と日本との中継地点だった。
そこで、朝鮮半島との交流の重要な役割を担っており、こうした国宝級の宝物が数多く残されている。
武士の時代になると、宗像大社の宗家の宗像氏は、時代の変化を敏感に読み取って対応し、南宋との貿易などに力を入れて、源頼朝のご家人となった。
12世紀から13世紀にかけて生きた、色定法師という人物は、およそ40年ほどかけて、たった一人で、仏教のすべての法典を合わせた一切経を写経した。
その40巻全てが宗像大社には残されている。個人が書いた一切経で、現在まで残されているのは、この色定法師のものだけだという。そのうちの何巻かが展示されていた。
一人の人間が、その人生の中で、一体どんなことを成し遂げられるのか?その一つの答えが、目の前にあるような気がした。
宗像氏は、戦国時代の末に絶えてしまったが、宗像大社は、その後も権力者たちの庇護を受け、江戸時代には、黒田氏が深い援助を与えていた。
狩野永徳、その弟の安信の手になる三十六歌仙図などは、その厚い庇護をよく表している。
